Lebanon High School Kicks Off the School Year With Elections
Lebanon, TN – Lebanon High School kicked off the 2022-2023 school year with class officer elections with the help of the Wilson Election Commission. Students have been voting for their class officers, homecoming courts and superlatives for several years now with the assistance of the Election Commission.
Class officer elections were held at Lebanon High School on _____. Students are in charge of every aspect of their elections from check in, marking the ballot to tabulation. All elections use the same voting system as used in regular county-wide elections in Wilson County.
“Students administer their elections using many processes as are used in federal, state and local elections. Being familiar with the preparation, details and operation of elections fosters an understanding and confidence in voting and elections. These experiences givers students a foundation and an appreciation of voting that will, hopefully, begin a tradition of voting that will last their lifetime,” said Tammy Smith, Administrator of Elections.
The Election Commission eagerly supports school elections and Smith also accept as many invitations to speak to high school civics classes as possible. The presentation gives students information about current election related issues as well as a look at the preparation and procedures involved in elections. Eligible students are given an opportunity to register to vote. Each year these classroom visits yield several hundred newly registered Wilson County voters.
Wilson County schools are closed on Election Days affording an opportunity for students to participate in elections. Students may earn volunteer hours for Tennessee Promise and Tennessee Scholars scholarships by serving as poll workers. They are trained and work alongside veteran poll officials to serve the voters on Election Day.
The Election Commission is committed to making the voting experience the best it can be for Wilson County voters. Through their outreach programs of providing school election support, speaking to senior and government classes, and being available with programs and support to other community groups, the Election Commission is fulfilling its commitment.
The next election being prepared for now by the commission is the November 8th, 2022 State and Federal General Election and the Lebanon, Mt Juliet and Watertown Municipal Elections. The qualifying deadline for candidates for the municipal election is Thursday, August 18th at Noon. The last day to register to vote in the November election is October 11th. Early Voting is October 13th through November 3rd at all four Early Voting sites and Election Day is November 8th at all 18 Vote Centers.
